Gary Smith passed away on July 17. Gary was a good friend, coach, mentor and rugby brother to all that passed through the Doylestown Rugby Club. Gary dedicated over 22 years of his life to coach and teach rugby to hundreds of young men for Doylestown Rugby, his work and devotion to rugby and the men at Doylestown will never be forgotten and is deeply appreciated.....Thank you Gary. As he would often say as he left, "Cheers Mate!"

The Doylestown men's team was victorious over Rocky Gorge in the MARFU finals set in Brandywine over the weekend! They are now set to face the Village Lions in the first round of National Sweet 16's in Manassas Virginia on Saturday, May 21st.
In the National Sweet 16's the Doylestown Dragons faced the Village Lions in an exciting back and forth game. However, in the final several mintutes, Brian Beauregard kicked a drop goal to secure a birth into the round of National Championships round of 8 against New Orleans.
Against New Orleans, the Dragons faced an impressive attack from the southern team which combined with a bout of bad luck proved to be too much for Doylestown.
Despite not making the final four this year, it was still a successful year for the Dragons who won the MARFU title for the first time in club history.
On Saturday the Ancient Dragons traveled to Randals Island to play our
inaugural game against the Gentlemen of New York. With a strong showing of 23
players we took the field looking sharp in the traditional Doylestown jersey,
nervous and unsure of how our debut would go as it had been many years for
several players since they had been on the pitch. It was a scoreless first half
with the Dragons gamely holding off the opponent until late in the half when
after a nicely placed kick and support New York scored the first try and
converted. The second try was scored by a player for New York who in years to
come will become known as Chabal from France who broke too many tackles to count
to score in the corner.
The seconf half opened with a phantom try by New York while both teams were
trying to figure out what the ref was going to call or not call. We are checking
the rule books to confirm that in Old Boys, offsides, hands in and playing the
ball while in a prone postion on the field are legal. Fortunately I was able to
avoid being sent off because as captain I could "offer my opinions" to the ref.
We got our dragon rugby legs under us and out played New York the rest of
the game. Playing deep in the opponents end Tom Meehan put across the first
Ancient Dragon try after returning from a sprained ankle suffered in the first
minutes of the game. We spent the rest of the game on their try line but were
unable to gain anymore points. Final Score 7-17
The bus ride back was filled with good singing and boot beer consumption.
We rode in style with the best bus driver ever, Rafael, from the Queens who used
to spend his late weekend nights on Randals Island trying to bat golfballs on to
the TriBoro bridge, our kind of guy whose drving technique helped us work on our
mauling on the way home.
It was a memorablle debut for the Ancient Dragons who no doubt are looking
forward to our next game Saturday April 30th at 11:00 home vs Morris.
