Fall Cross Country 2014

New Canaan Blazers cross country club

State Championships, November 1

Braving poor weather conditions, a few hearty New Canaan Blazers runners toed the starting line at the Middle School State Championships, coached by Bill Martin. In the girls A race, Whitney Bryant finished 17th out of 354 runners in 15:09 for the 2.3 mile course. Cameron Appleby placed 36th, followed by Eva Finn in 231st place and Valentina Londono in 350th place. In the boys A race, Bart Codd was the top finisher for the NC Blazers in 15:33, good for 177th place out of 384 runners, followed by Brendan Mulvany in 281st place. Full results including times are linked in the Meet Schedule below.

Wickham XC Invitational, October 11

On a cold and rainy Saturday morning, a few brave New Canaan Blazers runners trekked to Wickham Park in Manchester, CT for the Wickham Invitational, which attracts about 4,000 middle and high school runners from the New England states.

The Wickham XC course is considered one of the most challenging in our area, and with temperatures in the 40's and steady rain pouring from above, it was a classic cross country race. Our NC Blazers performed well, with Whitney Bryant and Emily Dowdle placing 6th and 39th, respectively, in the girls race. The boys were led by Christian Meier in 31st place, followed by Dylan Imbruce (49th), Brendan Mulvany (69th) and Matt Sandor (109th). No team placings are available for the NC Blazers (both boys and girls had incomplete teams). Full results including times are linked in the Meet Schedule below.

The CT State Championships on November 1 will be held at Wickham Park.

Brewster Bear XC Invitational, September 20

The New Canaan Blazers youth cross country team travelled across state lines to compete at the Brewster Bear Invitational on Saturday, September 20 in Brewster, New York. Having surprised a few teams from Fairfield County the previous Saturday with a 3rd place at the Wilton Invitational, the young Blazers under second year coach Bill Martin (who also coaches the New Canaan Boys High School Cross Country and Track & Field teams) once again climbed on the podium with a 2nd place, beating local favorite Brewster on their home course and finishing behind winner New Fairfield, CT. Last year the same New Canaan team placed outside the top 5 at both invitationals.

For the second week in a row, Christian Meier placed 2nd overall in the boys racel, with a time of 9:40 over the hilly 2500 meter (1.6 miles) course, leading the Blazers to an outstanding team performance. For the Blazers, Bart Codd placed 6th in 10:04, Brendan Mulvany 8th in 10:19, Patrick Colwell 9th in 10:31, Alex Rashad 25th in 11:59, Fredrik Asker 33rd in 13:23, and Max Nurzia 35th in 13:29. In the girls youth race, the Blazer's Valentina Londono finished 14th in 13:41.

Wilton XC Invitational, September 13

With clouds and rain threatening over Allen's Meadow in Wilton, Conn., the New Canaan Blazers youth cross country team had to run fast at the 26th annual Wilton Cross Country Invitational Meet on Saturday, September 13 to beat the impending afternoon storm. And race fast they did. Under second-year Coach Bill Martin, the NC Blazers competed against 6 teams in separate boys and girls 1.5 mile races on a grass and woods trail course, and left with some nice bling and new-earned respect among running teams from neighboring towns.

The NC Blazers boys' team finished an impressive 3rd behind Wilton and Fairfield, with a tie-breaker deciding 2nd and 3rd place between Fairfield and New Canaan, and ahead of Danbury, Ridgefield and New Fairfield. Competing with some of the best running programs in the state, the young New Canaan team's success turned quite a few heads at the awards ceremony. Led by Christian Meier's 2nd overall place (covered the 1.5 mile course in 8:40), the New Canaan boys team included Bart Codd (2nd among 7th grade), Patrick Colwell (3rd among 7th grade), Dylan Imbruce (1st among 6th grade), Brendan Mulvany, Matt Sandor, Alex Rashad, and Fredrik Asker.

Competing for the NC Blazers girls' team were Cameron Appleby (2nd among 7th grade), Skylar Bennett, Valentina Londono, Eva Finn, and Clara Hennessey.

The New Canaan Blazers cross country club is coached by Bill Martin, head coach of the New Canaan high school boys track & field and cross country programs. Coach Martin brings 30 years of Division I college and high school coaching experience for both men and women. Considered one of the top US mid-distance runners in the late 70's and early 80's, Coach Martin's running achievements include multiple All-American honors in both high school and Division I college, multiple Olympic trials qualifier, Olympic Finalist, Millrose Games Champion, and multiple USATF national champion.
